I am not a professional flavorist, but I found this site very interesting:

In particular, look at this webpage:

If you go to the middle box and select "Root Beer," you will get information on ingredients useful in commercial rootbeer formulations. Pretty neat, huh?

I went to this site and had difficulty getting information. I suspect the site may have changed since this post. I do not get any results when I type Root Beer into a box and submit. Aruszinsky, would you mind checking out the site to see if you are able to get results from a search?
