So I tried to make root beer a couple of times and it didn't turn out so well.

I used:
1 tablespoon root-beer extract
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon yeast (whatever kind you have in your kitchen)
cool water

I tried leaving it sit for 2 days and 6 days and not matter what as soon as I open the bottle, I get a really bad smell. The root beer tastes ok, but the smell the ruins everything. Is there a reason it smells bad? I used regular active yeast that I got from my grocery store. Is that whats giving it the bad smell?

I read a bunch of places that its best to use ale or champagne yeast. I was going to order some different kinds of yeast from hoptech.com to see if that worked.

So is the yeast the problem?

Sounds like the yeast. You can't smell that in canned / bottled root beer because very few brands (if any) are carbonated with yeast.
