So many choices. My top choice would be 1919, followed by A&W from the tap. Rollie's is up there.

Barq's would be excluded from consideration due to their contamination with caffeine.

Thomas Kemper

Virgil's Special Bavarian Nutmeg

I recently had a Henry Weinhard's, and thought it had too much vanilla. I had it with Indian food though, which could have thrown off my palate.

I'd like to add that I appreciate the variety in root beer. With cola, two brands dominate worldwide, and a lot of people couldn't tell the difference between them. With root beer, I could select )at least) 10 brands that all taste good, but different.

All this talk is nice, but we seem to be avoiding the real issue here.

Which brand is the best?

It all depends on personal preference. I really like Henry Wienhards, because I love the vanilla flavor. I also enjoy Rat Bastard and Sprecher, as well as IBC and Jones. For me, I really don't like Virgils - its high on my worst rootbeer list. The brand that's the best is the one you like the best.

I'm really surprised at the positive comments here with respect to Rat Bastard. I personally find that brand to be worsted only by Journey Desert Sage, one of the most medicinally putrescent elixirs that has ever passed these lips. Rat Bastard strikes me almost as unpalatable, while at least being recognizable as root beer, unlike the Desert Sage.

One that I have great difficulty finding here in Southern California, but which really wowed me a couple times, is Milligan's Island. It seems to have a delightfully complex flavor without being excessively sweet. Nearly as good, and much easier to find, is Sparky's. It seems consistently good, while there are a number of brands that seem to have quite a bit of variation from batch to batch.

Without question, the best I've run across is Capt'n Eli's. Followed by Seadog, Weeping Radish and a few others. I like many of the one's already mentioned but the Captain takes the award from me.
