Hi David,

Naturally flavored root beer is made with sassafras, which was banned by the FDA. Although there is a way to extract the flavor, artificial sassafras flavor is used now.

There are quite a few brands that use natural sweeteners and other natural flavors beyond sassafras. Not sure if that meets your definition of "true" root beer, but it's likely as close as you can get.

"Natural flavors" does not imply traditional or endemic. Since natural versions of many flavor chemicals are available, a manufactured can start with an all artificial recipe and later change to natural versions of the same chemicals just so that they can put "natural flavors" on the label. Natural chemicals are isolated from natural sources. For example, castoreum is isolated from beaver anus. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castoreum . If the labeled ingredients of root beer says "natural flavors," there is nothing to prevent a manufacturer from flavoring the root beer with castorium. You probably wouldn't regard it as a "true root beer" but there is no way to tell. If you want something done your way, you have to do it yourself.
